| The issue of stretching come up frequently with work with my clients. i have found that stretching is not necessary if you move with attention. Muscles regain length with you move with attention. I've witnessed this with other people and experienced this on myself. We are not terrible people because we are taught to stretch in physical therapy school but this thinking may have a better way to regain flexibility. Think about the neurophysiology. If muscles get tight then we stretch the muscle. What actually happens is unfavorable changes in muscle length the golgi tendon organ activates the stretch reflex. The tendons have a little receiptor called the golgi tendon organ that sends signals to the brain (stretch reflex) to protect injury to the muscle. Another paradox in life. We are taught to stimulate a survival mechanism. The Anat Baniel Method(sm) and the Anat Baniel Method for Children(sm) are service marks of Anat Baniel.
